Hanadama certified pearls means 'flower pearl' - it is a name that is issued to Japanese Akoya pearls that have been reviewed by the Japanese Pearl Science Laboratory and that pass the review process.
Only the EXACT strand of pearls that has been reviewed by the Pearl Science Laboratory can be named and sold as a Hanadama grade pearls. The strand of pearls labeled as Hanadama pearls should be accompanied by a Hanadama certificate issued just for that specific pearl necklace.

The certificate explained:

• The top portion of the Hanadama Certificate shows the pearls that were evaluated by the Pearl Science Laboratory. For the certificate to remain valid, the same number of pearls that were evaluated must be present on the necklace. In other words, no substitution of pearls is allowed in the strand AFTER a certificate is issued.

• The certificate also shows the methodology used to test and examine the pearls. It is noteworthy is that x-ray testing is used to measure the thickness of pearl nacre - this is the only 100% fool-proof way of determining nacre thickness.

• Thickness of the pearl layer (nacre) test by X-ray and by Fiber Optical inspection. TERI-Value Analysis is an indication of the luster of the pearl. Luster is one of the highest value factors for a necklace - a higher luster is preferred. Imperfections is the level of blemishes on the pearl surface. A pearl with fewer blemishes is more valuable. In the case of Hanadama pearls, the blemish level must be minute.

• The conclusion is that the strand is of sufficient quality to merit the HANADAMA name.
